Patti Smith is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night," which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. Smith has released twelve studio albums, three live albums, four compilation albums, and thirty-four singles. She is also a visual artist and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad. Smith has been nominated for several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for her song "People Have the Power" in 1989.
