Suh sang in a choir for Los Angeles-based KTE radio when she was a child, performing Korean folk songs and American pop and children's songs. Her parents were Korean immigrants from Seoul who came to the United States as students in the 1960s. She attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, graduating in 1997 and The Mountain School in Vershire, VT. As a high schooler, she self-released a six-track EP and sold several hundred copies of it. She then attended Brown University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English. As a college student, she continued performing, and eventually drew the attention of Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin.
